Water Before Machines: Why We Test Before We Recommend
When choosing an espresso machine, most conversations start with the machine itself.
How many groups? What kind of boiler system? What is the expected volume? What kind of workflow does the bar require?
But there is another part of the system that deserves the same level of attention: the water.
At Roasttrip, before we advise on water treatment, we first require a chemical laboratory analysis of the feed water.
Because we don’t believe in recommending a filtration system simply because a filtration system is available.
We first need to understand the water.
Every Site Has Different Water
Water can vary significantly from one location to another.
Even within the same city, different sites can have different mineral compositions depending on their source and supply.
Two locations may have similar TDS readings while having very different levels of calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, chlorides, hardness, or other dissolved components.
That matters because water influences both coffee extraction and equipment performance.
So before we recommend a solution, we look at what the site actually has.
We Start With the Analysis
A laboratory analysis gives us a clearer picture of the water’s mineral and chemical composition.
Depending on the application, the chemical analysis may include:
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), 0.7/442 Conversion Factor
Calcium
Magnesium
Total Alkalinity
Chlorides
pH
Hardness
Other relevant mineral and chemical parameters
These results give us the information needed to assess the water against the requirements of the coffee application and equipment.
The Solution Depends on the Water
This is where we believe water treatment should be approached differently.
Not every site needs the same solution.
In some cases, the existing water may already be suitable for the intended application.
In others, the water may require treatment or adjustment to bring it closer to the desired range.
Depending on the analysis, the appropriate solution could involve filtration, mineral adjustment, blending, or another treatment approach.
The important part is that the solution comes after the analysis.
We don’t start with a product.
We start with the water.
Water Is Part of the Coffee System
Water doesn’t simply enter the espresso machine and disappear.
It becomes part of every extraction while also passing through boilers, valves, pumps and other internal components.
This makes water an important part of the overall coffee system — alongside the espresso machine, grinder, workflow and coffee itself.
The objective isn’t to remove as many minerals as possible.
The objective is to achieve water that is appropriate for the coffee application while supporting the long-term performance of the equipment.
Our Approach
Our process is simple:
Test → Analyse → Assess → Advise → Verify
We test the feed water.
We analyse its composition.
We assess it against the requirements of the application.
Then we advise on the solution — whether that means filtration, adjustment, treatment, or in some cases, no additional treatment at all.
Because the right solution isn’t always another piece of equipment.
Sometimes, the best recommendation is simply knowing that the water is already right.
Start With the Water
Water treatment shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all decision.
Before choosing a system, understand what you’re working with.
At Roasttrip, we use water analysis to help determine the appropriate solution for each coffee application and installation.
We don’t sell a filtration system first and work backwards.
We test the water first, then advise.
